After the solid propellant rocket, I decided to challenge myself, so I designed and built a liquid bi-propellant rocket using a Student Researched and Developed (SRAD) motor with a nitrous oxide (N2O) and ethanol (C2H6O) propellant combination. I built the structure using fiberglass lamination and epoxy, 3D printing, and primarily machine work in 6061-T6 aluminum. Only the parachutes and recovery electronics are Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS).
Several software programs are being used to model this rocket and ground support systems, including Fusion 360, Excel, OpenRocket, EasyEDA, and Arduino IDE.
The mission is to test and flight-test the rocket with a 3,000 N engine for 4 s of burn using a showerhead injector. At the moment, the rocket is in test phase. The estimated launch date is in July 2026.
